So this was one of the projects I wanted to work on yesterday, and actually the call from daycare interrupted finishing a third canvas of an actual ship at sea. But I was winding down anyway and about to quit to hop on the bike when I got the call.
For now it'll have to be enough, b/c it sounds like the next project on my list is a backsplash, so we should have lots of fun pics of torturous trips to Home Depot and mucking around with plaster real soon. Good times.

Confession time
Growing up really poor had a lot of different impacts on me. For one, I'm a lot more materialistic than I'd like to be, but that's how not having much seems to have manifested itself in me as I grow older. Balance that with my inner-Scrooge's penny-pinching ways and it's not always a recipe for success. But as much as I don't want my kid to grow up feeling like that (jeez, it never fails to hit me, cripes, I'm a father, don't screw it up), one thing I would like to impart on him is getting the most bang for your buck when you're out shopping.
That's a stupidly long-winded way to introduce the idea that one thing I have a hard time ignoring is the appeal of a new watch. I have a few different ones, each one from a different occasion and they're all in a kind of rotation. Quiksilver and Invicta show up a lot, and even though it makes me look like a hipster doofus I do occasionally wear the pocket watch my mother-in-law gave me. Anyway, I added one to the collection this week, much to the dismay of my wife.
Ebay is the devil. If I'm looking for a watch and can find it for less than a third of the amazon price, more than likely I will by it. And that was the case with this pro diver.
Very similar to a rolex submariner, hence the appeal. Also very similar to the "Bond" watch from Goldfinger. I'll admit I'm not going to drop $3K on a watch, but if I can get one of similar visual fashion for $50 then I'm all over it.
So when lunch-time Friday rolled around and I was already heading out, I figured I might as well stop by the Fossil in water tower to see if I could find a replacement band. I know watch purists might say it needs to be the black-red-green of the movie to be a real Bond watch, but I was happy to find a plain black and grey option instead. Popped the old band off, slid the new band on, and presto, instant new addition to the rotation.
Honestly, this might be the end of the collection for a while. And the wife would be thrilled with that. But this one's automatic so it won't need a battery, the band will work both at the office and on the weekends, and it's easy to replace if needed. Win-win-win, even if it isn't an exact match to 007's.

Ugh.
Our AC crapped out last night, which made the baby's 3 AM feeding a disaster of epic proportions. And that was before the yoga ball we use to bounce him to sleep ended up with a hole in it. So I'm tired as all fuck today, putting me in a great mood to go to some baptism class tonite. It looks like I'm really not doing anything productive today, so let's review my crappy lunch instead.
Seen those commercials with people dancing all around the room as they shake up their frozen just add juice smoothie? I'm not a dancer but I do enjoy the occasional smoothie. So when we saw them this weekend we picked up a few. Being lazy, it's easy to grab a bottle of juice and a tube of frozen goo for lunch, so it fit the bill today. Turns out when you're exhausted and crabby some overly sweet fruit slush isn't quite as appealing.
This stuff is pretty much idiot proof. See that line? Don't fill it up past that.
Then shake.
Ultimately you end up with some puke-colored fruit-based liquid. A different juice would probably go a long way towards turning this experience positive, but apple was all I could get my hands on.
After eating about 75% of it, my stomach is starting to churn a little bit. Which might not be a terrible thing. If I spend most of the afternoon in the bathroom, at least I can play games on my phone. Hopefully it will help the rest of the day pass at a quicker pace.
All of these factors have planted me directly in the "meh" camp on this first experience. Getting past the color and extreme sweetness, the convenience and portability outweigh any outright negatives. I would try it again, but not expect much out of it.

Faced with a choice between the bus or the bike, the bike is going to win. And it did today, when I had to drop off some grant proposals at Chicago & Ashland. I was debating the bus or the bike, and once the bike won it was going in the middle of the day vs. going at the end.
Going at the end of the day had obvious positives: I could leave earlier, take a new route home, both things I enjoy doing. But I'm already leaving early today after last night, and the new route home was basically Chicago's hipster silk route--Milwaukee to Chicago up to Lincoln Square. No thank you. So instead of eating lunch I hit the road.
All in all it went well. Locking up on a tree is never my favorite but pickings were pretty slim.
When I was unemployed, there were a few interviews that I couldn't figure out how best to get to and ended up walking a ways. One such interview had me walking down lake all the way past the dan ryan. Going over the dan ryan today made me glad I rode instead of walked, but also made it feel like I was pretty far away.
There was also a river crossing with a grated bridge. I toughed it out on the way out, but after sliding all over the place the first time said screw that on the way in. I walked, b/c why the hell not.
Good times. Now to just make it through the next few hours, then enjoy a trip to Soldier Field for Bears' family night and a few Labatts. Thank god we have football this year.

And the first blizzard watch of 2011 Chicago is on! Will we actually get anywhere close to the 24+ inches of snow some forecasts are predicting? More importantly, will I be able to handle a few days on the train, or will I crack and say "screw it, I'm using a sick day"? A middle of the week snow day can be pretty enjoyable sometimes, if you're not trapped in whiteout conditions for too long.

Thankfully conditions were nicer yesterday for a few more hours of house-hunting. We saw a few possibilities, but we'll have to see how the comps shake out and what kind of offer we can put together. In the meantime, failing to close on our first offer hasn't stopped us from trying to start organizing for a move.
One trouble area in our apartment is always our dvd collection. It hasn't grown too much lately as we get the most bang for our netflix buck but we do have a few years of dvds worth keeping but taking up space.

So like anything else, we threw some money at the issue and bought some new storage racks. Wading through the crowd at the container store was surprisingly intense, almost like the crowd at a grocery store before a major blizzard. I don't know who needs to stock up on modular storage units before getting two feet of snow but evidently there are people like that out there.
Two new containers made a big dent in the clutter, even though it was a little difficult to part with some of those dvd boxes. But into recycling they went. Still, two 100 dvd storage racks barely took half the collection, so the next day we walked back to get two more. Thankfully we took the dog and I got to stay outside with her while the wife took a deep breath and headed in.
Two more containers did the trick, with plenty of room for expansion later.
It is a little strange what boxes made the cut though. The Simpsons, Lost, or Veronica Mars did not, but Justice League in the collectors tin did, and so did Futurama. So did Venture Brothers, and that was actually the wife's idea b/c of the box art. Batman Begins stayed b/c of the comic insert, so Dark Knight had to stay as well. And she let me leave Batman & Superman up there too. Man we are nerds.
It was a fun exercise and actually got me a little excited to pack when we actually have a place lined up. We'll see how long that feeling last though, I'm not holding my breath.

All this time on my hands
So I might as well ride. And for all the riding I've done, and running, I've never actually checked out the circle drive to Navy Pier. It's not my favorite spot in the city but with all the free time I've got I might as well have. It's not the most exciting, but there's good people and dog watching.
That's a 'new' saddle, new to me at least, from ebay earlier this week. The bike's getting its grit, even if I'm not. Slightly dingy but much more butt-appropriate than the gel-filled monster the mother-in-law had on.
I admit, the reason I wanted to ride was to test a possible commute, but I think that's getting way ahead of myself. Yet again there's a holiday coming up, so all thoughts of actually getting hired and working get put on the backburner to make room for booze and relaxation. Relaxation from what, I couldn't tell you. But it's there all the same.

This is what I've been doing
So I've mentioned my penchant for using the kitchen to stay busy as I job search before, but I've never actually told an interviewer. Until today. Yeah for phone interviews on Friday where you stopped caring!
I've also mentioned (here, at least) that I am not a rib guy. But that didn't stop me from spending 5 hours making dinner last night, baking a rack of ribs low & slow before tossing them on a hot grill for a few minutes. Any vegetarians reading might want to skip this entry.
To start, a dry rub. I'm not sure what possessed me to do this, other than spending way too much time watching Food Network recently and thinking dinner preparation is a fine way to fill an afternoon. My simple choices? Sugar, salt, pepper, garlic.
The thing I like most about trying something new is not always knowing exactly what comes next. This was a monster rib. Rinsing made sense, but after that I didn't know how to start.
Lucky for me, two halves fit perfectly into the crappy pan I planned on using so on went my dry ingredients. A little water to line the bottom of the pan made sure that the ribs absorbed as much steam as possible to stay juicy.
Next, 275 degrees for the rest of the afternoon. It might not have been the smartest day to have the oven on all afternoon considering how hot it was, but I'm more of an open window guy anyway. Around the 90 minute mark, you could smell the sugar caramelizing and baking in. The rest of the afternoon was filled with a lovely pork smell. Positively delicious.
This was at the 4 hour mark. The charcoals went into the grill after 5 PM and while they were lighting I slathered on some bbq sauce. The meat was so tender a chunk came off while I was trying to pick one half up, exactly what I was looking for. I honestly don't think I've ever had ribs prepared this way, since my parents always just charred the shit out of them on a grill. Which explains why I was never a rib person, and why I didn't try this earlier.
Making bbq sauce from scratch would definitely fall in line with my "take as much time in the kitchen as possible" approach, but sometimes you've gotta draw the line. Sauce out of the bottle is fine with me. With the grill set, the ribs went on for just long enough to burn some of the sauce and get a nice smoke on the meat.
And, the finished product:
Unfortunately, they looked better than they tasted at this point. A few more minutes on the grill would have remedied that, b/c they were closer to room temperature than I would have preferred. Other than that, these were pretty outstanding. Tender, juicy, and fall off the bone.
Leftovers this afternoon, that's all that was left. Before or after a bike ride, I haven't decided. It might be a while before I make these again, but I might have to reconsider my stance on ribs in general after eating these. Awesome.

Get back in the kitchen
While it's true that job searching can be a full-time occupation in and of itself, the unemployed often have to find other ways to supplement their activities. I've sometimes found it enjoyable to find those supplemental activities in the kitchen, and today have two new recipes to try.
I've never been a huge fan of ribs, but I think that's partly b/c I've never had them when they've been prepared all day, baking low and slow and then topped off with a few minutes on the grill. More on that later.
I also have a recipe for "San Francisco" cookies, chocolate chip cookies with banana puree and granola. Sounded interesting. Didn't have any granola, but tried them anyway.
Evidently the granola was a key ingredient structurally, b/c I needed some extra flour and sugar to get the dough to the point I could even call it a "scoop" on the baking sheet. They went into the oven closer to "goop," but they smelled good.
I don't know at this point if I have cookies or round, miniature banana bread loaves. Neither of those are bad options, so I'll consider this a success if they taste halfway decent. And now, onto the ribs!

Out of town
A friend's dad passed away over the weekend and I should be getting ready for my trip, or at least looking into booking a hotel and a car for a night in Buffalo. Instead after running some errands on Frankenbike I'm taking a second run at some of the blemishes in the paint job from last fall.
That's what happens when you put the frame back in the car too early I guess. But it sanded off easy enough and I still have some spray paint so what the hell. It's just intensive enough to take my mind off things for a while.
Of course, when you do things half-assed in an attempt to put off packing for a trip that's going to be really sad, things can go awry. Hence my previously all-black groove stem now appearing in a "stardust" colorway. Oops. Well, when your bike is crap why not just make the whole thing crap. And yeah, that's also the light-holder in the picture. Fuck it, I didn't want to take the entire headset off.
As the clear enamel dries I have in fact had plenty of time to put a bag together, I just haven't bothered. And it's not that I don't want to go--this is to support a good friend and someone I care about. It's what I should do and I have no problem going. Paying for everything when I've been out of work for 6 months might be another issue, but that's just part of dealing with everything. This really isn't the place to ruminate on death and the nature of life either; it's just sobering is all. And I think I'll be looking at this picture to get a smile a lot over the next two days.

stir crazy
Recently I've been battling a bit of cabin fever. After the holidays my runs with the dog have picked back up, but that still leaves the majority of the day to sit around and job search and whatever else I can think of to fill each day. Battling depression takes less time than you might think, especially if you're prepared to let go and accept things every once in a while. On top of job searching, I've also been looking for a decent bike trainer I can set up. If I don't have a job to ride to, I still want to at least peddle something. Running is fine but eventually I'd like to bike commute again without my ass killing me for the first month.
The real miracle of the internet age is that if you're looking to buy something specific, you'll find it eventually if you know where to look. Specifically, I was looking for a wind trainer in Chicago that I could pick up cheap and not have to worry about shipping. I found it earlier this week, and won it on ebay for 50 bucks.

I picked it up this morning and set up was easier than I expected. Before getting the bike on, the hardest part was setting up the second bedroom to function as more than just the treadmill room.
This

eventually turned into this

Not too bad. Putting the raleigh in with its bolt-on wheels was a little tricky but I think it will work. A riser for the front wouldn't be a bad idea either if it helps steady the set up, I never have the most faith in my balance sitting still.

Again, a good way to fill some time and get riding again. It's entirely possible all it will take to get a job offer is finding a different way to keep riding, but until then at least I can ride.

If only my powers were used for good...
If thanksgiving's shown me anything, it's that a two-step baking process can easily be stretched out to a five or six-step afternoon filler. Baking and frosting cookies proved to be no exception.
Dough by hand, frosting by hand with food coloring. Give me all afternoon to do some holiday work and I'll make a joke out of it somehow.

Give me all afternoon to do some holiday work and I'll make a joke out of it somehow.I also tried a classic from my childhood, a pineapple roll -log you slice and shape into a christmas tree when they get baked. This one doesn't need any stretching, as you're already working with yeast and letting the dough refrigderate for 2-3 days before rolling it out and combining the filling. It's already crazy complicated, so let's hope it tastes like it should on top of taking up two days of my time.

high time for pie
There's only so much job searching you can do. And while gaining employment is pretty much number one on my priority list right now, there are way more hours in the day than there are job sites and resources. So sometimes it's necessary to find other things to add to that to do list.
Such as, buy some pie pumpkins and try to make a pie. Seasonal-appropriate but maybe not the easiest way to fill a couple of the morning hours. Exactly what I was looking for in a project.
Cut it.
Hopefully it's alright if things are still a little stringy. Not having had the pie yet I have to admit I don't know. That was another plus for the project though; not knowing how to do something like this makes me flex some different muscles and plus, my mom made the best pies ever when I was a kid and I'd love to be able to make them myself. On that front, I didn't want to mush things up too much, b/c the pies I had as a kid always had some chunks of pumpkin in the pie that soak up spice and really give the pie good texture.
Into the mixer with all the spices, eggs, and sugar. This looked way runnier than I expected but seems to have baked up well. Surprisingly (again, and this is why I don't really bake) there was a lot of mix left over after filling the crust up too. Again, I just kind of shrugged and threw it in the oven.

First step, buy some pie pumpkins. Not only does finding them in the neighborhood take time, but prepping them is also way more labor intensive than opening a can. Plus, this makes for a much better pie.
Clean it.
Cut it.
Gut it. This was a lot easier than carving a normal pumpkin. Used an ice cream scoop, it took about 30 seconds.

According to the internet there are a lot of different ways to get the parts you want to make a pie out of ready, but microwaving it for 15 minutes just sounds gross to me. Today I steamed mine, cutting the halves again and putting them over a steamer tray for about 25 minutes.

After they came out of the pot, the guts were soft enough to slide right off the skin and into the food processor. This was about when the dog started to realize I was messing with food, even though it didn't smell too edible and it wasn't like I was going to offer her some steamed pumpkin guts.

After

Judging by the after, things might have worked out pretty well. The good thing about spending a morning like this, on top of hopefully having a delicious pie, is that all the baking gave me plenty of time to do the usual morning job searches and send some apps out. Now I just have to keep trying to forget another awful weekend of football. Outstanding.
