At least I got a new lock out of it

Man, after getting horrifically sick last weekend and finally riding back in to work today, the last thing I needed to see was the absence of my good old ulock on the rack when I got in.  But there it was (not), and it kind of pissed me off.

Granted, I had my chain with me b/c I take it back and forth and could still lock up, but I've already had to replace one lock when the indoor parking closed and damned if I was going to replace another one after getting it cut off without notice.  So I calmly called around the security office, and suggested they replace my ulock.  Imagine my surprise when they delivered a new kryptonite series 4 to my office later this morning.

This place drives me nuts sometimes.

yeah, maybe I'm not so interested

Why is it the interviews you're least interested in keep you waiting the longest to get started?  It's only a chance to work myself into saying "Thanks, no thanks" before things even get started.

Obviously I had a phoner today, and actually I think I conducted myself quite well considering my initial look at the description had me wondering why exactly they were calling me.  But it was a director-level position and it might not have gone too poorly.

The best thing about it was as I was talking, two different people came by to shush me.  Yeah, fuck you.  I keep thinking I want to move into a more student services-focused role, but every interaction I have with actual students tells me that might not be the case.  I guess it's good that I just applied for a Dean of Students role then.

I'm drinking this weekend, but I'm going to try and keep it level.  "Try" being the operative word.

Oops, too late

Here's an idea: if you want people to come to your early morning meeting on a day when we have a 6 PM meeting planned, maybe invite them before noon on Sunday.  B/c when I see an automated note pop up on my ipad at home on Sunday turning my Monday into a 12-hour day it makes me feel homicidal.

And of course, not everyone gets in on time anyway.

Too bad too, b/c here I was feeling good that at least I didn't get any "thanks but no thanks" emails the previous Friday.  Instead I ended up grinding my teeth all day Sunday and now that I'm here I'm counting down the hours until I get to leave.  Good times.

Setting up

Oh, you're surprised I didn't show up an hour earlier than I said I would to help set up to tonite's dinner? Don't let the fact I'm here at all distract you from the nice Saturday I was having at home with my son and pregnant wife.

Christ almighty I hope I get an offer I'll accept soon. 5 whiskeys can only do so much.

Dammit

So I took the weekend to "think about" the offer from Friday, confident in my decision to turn it down.  That feeling intensified when I got an email from another place about the interview I had earlier in the month that I thought I hit out of the park asking me to call them to discuss their hiring process.  Of course I'll call.

Yeah, that phone call did not go as positively as I expected it to and you could tell it was going that way right off the bat.  So I turned down one job, and didn't get the offer I thought I might on the other.  Whoops.

Which makes me feel a little more foolish about saying no elsewhere, but considering I had already made that decision before I had the second phone call I guess I shouldn't.  I also set up another interview for next week, and am still hoping to hear back from another interview from last week, so it's not like there's not hope for me out there.  It just sucks not hearing what I thought I'd hear.

Throw in a crappy, wet ride this morning and this Monday has shaped up for shit.  So I'm gonna go home, drink a whiskey, and watch GoT.  That should take care of things.

For fucks sake

With baby #2 on her way the wife and I are getting pretty close to pulling the trigger on a bigger vehicle.  She reminded me I've got a few fees left on my account that weren't covered by my employee tuition benefit that I should pay off before we go get a credit check, and since I've spent this week listening to students tell me how the Bursars office has mis-billed them, I realized I should check my own statement more closely before just automatically paying whatever was left.

And motherfucker wouldn't you know it, a third of the bill was late fees.  Which is ridiculous, since it was HR paying the tuition in the first place.  And now that I've only look at that at 9:30 PM, I get to stew about it until I can calmly and rationally get it fixed tomorrow.  Good fucking times.

What's that?  I need to stay late at work tonite after getting two hours of non-consecutive sleep last night?  And there's not going to be alcohol?  Fan-fucking-tastic.

Not liking where this is going

I didn't have high expectations regarding the speed at which Trek would have a decision and (hopefully) a replacement frame for the Pilot, but I was hoping that after a month I would have at least heard something by now.  Turns out, On the Route lost the original receipt that I dropped off, and now Trek is asking for it.  Awesome.

What I'm pissed about is I wouldn't have heard anything if I hadn't come in to follow up.  OTR and their dopey new manager Jake called me back to tell me Trek was asking for the paperwork, to which I responded "Oh, the paperwork I gave you so you'd ship the bike in the first place?"

Not a good sign.

So we'll see if the frame ever gets replaced and if I ever go back to OTR.  Not looking real good at this point.  At least I had the Raleigh as a back-up.

Where's the kick?

I'm posting on my iPad while the meeting I'm conferencing into posts a webinar that's the second half of the agenda. Brrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmm.
At least I can get up to piss and no one will be the wiser. Until I post something about it ON THE INTERNET.

three weeks

Thanksgiving is just three weeks away. A mere 23 days. I can it that. Just hang on a few more weeks and it's five days off time. Sure, no problem.

ugh

It might not be fall for another two weeks but I hate this time of year. Yesterday's commute home was through a hellacious headwind, and tonite's looks to go around a fashion show commemorating the opening of a new shop where Borders used to be. Yahoo.
And yes, that is a line of idiots waiting to get into the store when the doors actually open. I cannot wait for this fucking week to be over.

Football.

gearing up

There are a few late nights sprawling out in front of me this week so I'm trying to be a little more zen while I bike as an attempt to relax. I'm swamped at work right now, updating handbooks and writing articles and doing whatever else I do before the school year starts and the idea of adding a few hours to my schedule this W-F is not helping.

Usually if I had to stay late I could go in late after a trip to the beach, but our car is basically dead and the idea of negotiating a sea of 'end-of-model-year sales at dealerships on top of all the furniture shopping we're already doing makes my stomach want to jump out of my body. But I'm way too frantically trying to get everything done by next Monday anyway to stick to an 8-hour workday. Joy.

So I try to squeeze as much enjoyment out of each bike commute as possible. It seems to be working, as I got passed on the right this morning by two Freds and it barely registered. I just have to make it until 8 PM Friday, then I'm all set. Plus, I bought more whiskey last weekend. Cars and furniture might be a pain, but I'd shop for whiskey all day if I could.

I know I've done this before having already spent more than a year at the new job, I just have no idea how it got done last time. The downside to having a program to call your own is managing that program, on your own.

Nothing like a ride in a pee-soaked el car to a waste-of-time interview at a non-profit staffing agency to make you appreciate having all day to yourself at home. It's time for a long ride tomorrow.

4/28/10

I had an interesting phone interview the other day. Actually, it was more of an experience than an interview. And why is that? B/c 40 minutes after the scheduled phone call, I still hadn't heard anything and emailed the woman I thought was going to be calling asking if we should reschedule.

One trend I've noticed in this job search versus my last one is that people are using group emails to set up preliminary phone interviews with candidates. They're usually just blocks of time and a request to list which times work for you with no other contact info other than the email. So when something like that happens, there's no number to call to check in or anything.

Evidently the interviewer had tried to call but hadn't gotten through. And instead of leaving me a voicemail or phone number just moved onto the next candidate. Granted, with the numbers of applicants I've been told people are getting I don't really blame her for moving on. But I would have appreciated at least a way to call her if she couldn't call me. She asked to reschedule, but at that point I felt it was in my best interest to withdraw and move on myself. That's if I can get by the sneaking suspicion that my phone is absolute crap. How many times has that happened where someone couldn't get through and just moved on? I'm going to be totally paranoid about this now.

Besides, I've got enough apps out there eventually I'll get lucky. Except with the Red Cross, who evidently either don't pay anything or don't read the entire applications they get. I've applied there twice, and each time gotten an email about how due to my "salary expectations" I'm not a viable candidate. Remembering that after the first one, I greatly reduced my salary guess and included a note on the second application that salary wasn't as important to me than finding a position where I was supporting a mission I could get behind. Still, same email. Oh well.

Back to the grindstone. Besides, it's too nice out now to work anyway. The dog agrees.
No I will not get in the car daddy.

"They took the bar! The whole...fucking...bar!"

It was one of those days. Dumb emails, headdesk phone calls, not enough sun.

The bike was a chance to turn that around this afternoon, stopping to soak up some of that sun and enjoy the idea of being free for the day, nearly the week.
So thanks, I needed that. I also needed a drink, which I got in the form of some Sailor Jerry's and Bacardi w/a splash of pineapple juice. Tropical, yes. Refreshing.

Refreshing enough to at least go back to work tomorrow, and gut out one more day.
