Apparently I'm blowing people's minds wearing an unlined jacket around the office two days in a row. It's still in the 30's outside but if I wear an extra layer it's newsworthy.
C'mon people, it's an unlined cotton blazer, it's barely a step up from a shirt and tie. Read a magazine once in a while.
Current beer-scale: 9.5 and can't wait for an interview next week.

mush damn you
Yeah, I was part of the problem today.
Going to the police academy this afternoon, in an area where it's very difficult to get a cab back from, so screw it, I drove.
Maybe I wasn't quite part of the problem, but I was definitely witness to it. Saw a bunch of drivers I would have called douche bags on a bike or not, but I also saw a bunch of bikers make what I would consider the absolute wrong decision if I was in the same scenario. Basically, everyone commuting is dumb except me.
The fact that I found a spot right on the street and didn't have to go into a garage is something I'm considering a karmic award for good driving, which just reinforces that everyone else is dumb.
It's Thursday and I can't wait to have a drink tonite.

Not liking where this is going
I didn't have high expectations regarding the speed at which Trek would have a decision and (hopefully) a replacement frame for the Pilot, but I was hoping that after a month I would have at least heard something by now. Turns out, On the Route lost the original receipt that I dropped off, and now Trek is asking for it. Awesome.
What I'm pissed about is I wouldn't have heard anything if I hadn't come in to follow up. OTR and their dopey new manager Jake called me back to tell me Trek was asking for the paperwork, to which I responded "Oh, the paperwork I gave you so you'd ship the bike in the first place?"
Not a good sign.
So we'll see if the frame ever gets replaced and if I ever go back to OTR. Not looking real good at this point. At least I had the Raleigh as a back-up.
Current beer-scale (if I ever had time to actually fucking drink): 8.7

I'm out!
Not really. But yesterday was about as close to rage-quitting in the middle of a commute than I've ever been. I got stuck behind two turds on Wilson who thought it'd be funny to run every stop sign they could and get as close to getting hit as possible. And who has to deal with the drivers they've pissed off? Me, the guy behind them. When I started rooting for them to get hit I knew I had to bail and take a different route. Christ what a couple of assholes.
Big difference so far today, with my fastest ride since I started tracking them this week w/an app and a trip to starbucks so I wouldn't have to make coffee at the office.
I'm usually not into metrics and stats for a commute, but since this app lets you win prizes every day you ride during the tour I figured I might as well give it a shot. It's actually kind of addicting to see the exact mileage of a route (when GPS is fully functioning) and know the split for each mile. This morning I dug in early and held it up for the entire route, and miles 4 through 7 were all under 3:00, leading to the quickest commute this week.
And since it's going to be a nice Friday afternoon by the time I'm back on the bike and the path will suck balls, this morning's ride will likely stay the fastest. Now I just have to find a few minutes to ride both days this weekend. That's the problem with addictions--once you're hooked, you're hooked.
Current beer-scale: 8.1 (speaking of addictions)

shake it off
Got to spend most of my ride in this morning shaking off the adrenaline rush from nearly getting sideswiped by some chick swooping into the bike lane on Fullerton to drop someone off. She was close enough for me to knock on her window on my way by so I could be sure she saw me flip her off. I'm regretting that now as my messed up middle finger is starting to swell a little but it had to be done.
I was hoping a lenten season spent trying to curb my over-eager middle-finger-ing on the bike would last past Easter, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Some other idiot got a passing finger after blocking the bike lane at the back of a line of traffic. She'd be damned if anyone was getting past her on either side, bike or car. After nearly getting clipped I wasn't in a patient mood so she got the finger along with some derogatory shouts.
The great part of all of this is in a few weeks my commute will be that much longer, giving me even better odds of having to interact with some retard on their phone or stuffing their face with burger king takeout while they haphazardly drive to work. Both of which I've already seen this morning, both of which make me want to throw my ulock through a window.
I'm taking a long ride up to lakeshore campus this afternoon and potholes or not, I'm taking the path for as long as possible to avoid all these idiots in cars. It's gonna be a long end of the week.

Baby it's cold outside
And I really should have stayed home today.
My office had a cookie exchange yesterday during our all-staff update meeting. I took the train to work carrying 30 cookies. At least I remembered how to make them from my time-killing exercises during unemployment last year.
In any case, it was 10 below zero so I wasn't too upset at not riding. Today I was back on the bike, even after having had too many cookies yesterday and wishing I could stay home. I probably should have, b/c work has me wishing I could reach through the phone and strangle people.
Not being able to use my usual bike rack this AM wasn't helping--why the fuck are there suddenly more people riding when it's below zero then when it was snow-free and a balmy 20 degrees? Pile that in with someone walking right in the front door with their folder when I was walking back from a rack further away and the day started with me ready to decapitate someone. Phone calls from idiots are only making things worse.
